Amongst the plethora of chinese restaurants in Chinatown is Rasa Sayang, a no frills restaurant serving Malaysian and Singaporean food. When you come here you can expect the familiar flavours from the area (sambal and belachan feature heavily) and favourites like redeng curry, roti and nasi goreng. When I visited, I decided to have the Laska which is one of my favourite dishes from Malaysia. And it’s easy to see why – noodles, seafood and tofu puffs in a rich, spicy curry broth – what’s not to like?! I also shared a dish of fried morning glory with my friend. Morning glory, or water spinach is a favourite vegetable of mine. Usually I have it with fermented tofu and chilli but here it was stir fried with belachan (dried shrimp paste) which gave it the salty hit normally provided by the fermented tofu in canto dishes. It’s the sort of place you order, eat and leave, but the food is tasty and homey and with most dishes costing less than £8, is great value for authentic Malay food.
