I previously wrote about Elements as part of my post about restaurants we visited in Wellington during our New Zealand trip (you can read about it here). Back then they were competing for the Cafe of the Year award. They won the award for best in the region and it was easy to see why with their tempting kiwi brunch menu and friendly service. Being a cafe, they usually close at 4pm but on the first Friday of the month they serve dinner. We’ve always enjoyed lunch there so decided to try the dinner menu and booked ourselves a table for 6pm.
To start Liam had the sous vide salmon with pickled vegetables, crispy salmon skin and pomegranate. It was beautifully plated and tasted just as good. I actually wanted to choose the same thing but decided variety was the spice of life and opted for the pork belly instead (plus I could always steal a bit from his). The pork was served with the all important crackling, stone fruit and a parsnip puree. The crackling was nice and crisp and the pork was well flavoured and went well with the tartness of the plums and apricots, although the cut I had was quite fatty. With pork belly there’s bound to be some fat, but there was a lot more than I expected. Nonetheless it was an enjoyable dish.

For mains, Liam had the pan fried catch of the day (gurnard). This came on a bed of cous cous and topped with smoked yoghurt. I had the grilled lamb rump which was served with mash, ratatouille and salsa. Both dishes were huge and even though it was tasty, I struggled to finish mine because there was so much! The lamb was delicious (although I would have preferred it to be slightly rarer) the mash was smooth and creamy and the ratatouille was full of flavour.

Overall we had a lovely meal. As in the daytime, the staff were friendly, the atmosphere was relaxed and the food was delicious. Definitely worth trying dinner there. Just make sure you put a reminder in your diary.
